Today we visited the Alcázar, one of Segovia’s main tourist attractions. In the first few days we were in Segovia, we all went and sat on a lawn and looked up at the Alcázar while relaxing and having an awesome photoop. We finally got to visit and explore inside the Alcázar after much anticipation, and it was really interesting to explore this piece of the city. After a short walk through the Plaza Mayor and past the Cathedral, we arrived at the Alcázar.
The Alcázar has served many different purposes, from being used as a fortress to a temporary residence for royalty. Now, it is used as a museum and historical landmark for tourists and locals alike to visit and enjoy. Many families have donated various pieces that have been passed down for generations and are now displayed in the Alcázar. Parts of the castle have been restored or reconstructed using imported pieces such as ceilings and other historical items from the same time period.
Inside, the Alcázar held many treasures for us to explore. It had many historical items such as armor and weaponry that was used during the time, such as cannons and swords. The Room of Kings and Queens had statues of many Spanish monarchs, created in their honor, which bordered the ceiling of the room. Throughout the tour, we were constantly reminded of the importance of Spanish pride, as the crest of Spain was incorporated into stained glass works, paintings, and the general decoration of the castle.
It was great to experience this unique part of Segovia’s history and we all enjoyed being able to explore and learn more about the Alcázar.
